Bako National Park

Bako National Park, in Sarawak, is an animal haven.![]()
You start off at Bako village and then take a short boat ride to the beach and mangroves if you are lucky you will come across a croccodile sitting on an upturned boat or a family of otters playing at the side of the river, the trip is interesting you are in a small boat and pass many local fisherman on the journey which takes about 1/2 hr.

The treks are demanding but worthwhile a few of them taking you to a secluded beach where you can be swimming in the south china sea and look ahead of you and see monkeys swinging in the trees. I was lucky enough to witness a family of probiscus monkey doing exactly that, you may also be fortunate enough to see the monkeys above you in the forest while you are trekking.

Macquattes are everywhere and I have to admit to not being over keen on being chased by these little animals but it is apparently part of the course. They will steal your food and ransack your accomodation. There are many wild boar around all of who keep themselves to themselves and are of no threat to anybody but very big and interesting to watch.
.
Amazing birds of all shapes sizes and colours are everywhere, as are different coloured crabs. Silver leaf monkeys which are much better behaved than the macquettes are a pleasure to watch, but the highlight has to be the probiscus monkey.
I was also lucky enough to come across them whilst trekking through the forest on the way to one of several beautiful beaches, but when the tide is out they are there for all to see.
The night walk is very interesting, the chance to see leopard cats, civits, flying squirrel and plenty more.
Accommodation and food is not 5 star but acceptable and is definitely a must see place.
