A.P.E. (a primate experience)

Selamat Datang and Welcome to my Borneo Diaries.

This website has been created to chronical my.thoughts, feelings and experiences during my animal adventures in Borneo.

It explains how I am trying to help with the rehabilitation of Orangutangs and Sun Bears in Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo and hopefully later in the year Macaques. With the help of Leo Biddle and Guillaume Feldman two conservationists behind the enviromental organistion WOX and the www.orangutanproject.com I am slowly learning the many issues surrounding conservation of endangered species.

Living in a developing country, working alongside local keepers at the Wildlife Centre and visiting the local Longhouse, getting to know the families there especially the children has been an amazing experience. It is also an opportunity to transfer knowledge and conservation ideals to the local community.

I can only describe sitting on a platform deep in the forest as one of the most memorable things I have ever done , the forest is so alive noisy yet quiet and to be in the presence of such amazing animals is an honour I sometimes have to pinch myself to believe that I have been lucky enough to be part of the start of the rehabilitation of not only one but now two Orangutans. I have over the last year had a wonderful relationship with Ting San and words will never describe the love we have for each other she looks into my eyes and my heart melts I will continue to follow her development for many years yet Right now she is starting a new life for herself in the trees with her own kind where she should be it is so very different from her past and my dream is that one day when both she and Mamu are older they will swing through the forest to visit me at the feeding platform and maybe even bring their own children for me to see. I will be waiting. Its a lovely feeling to know we will remember each other for ever.

I am planning a trip to South Africa to now follow my passion for smaller primates, hopefully I will be able to learn a lot about the Vervet Monkey and Baboons and learn about the African people cullture and their animals and continue to use my energy to help wherever needed, I am very excited to be extending my travels to another country.

I would like to acknowledge my families patience and support in allowing me the freedom to follow this great passion and partake in these wonderful experiences.

Hey heather, good picture! Hope the headache has gone and guess i’ll see you in the morning! Great blog by the way, really informative. Makes mine look a bit weedy in comparison!

Hi Heather! How are the Sun Bears settling in? They are so lucky that you came along and saved them from a life in a small cage. Keep up the good work. Cannot believe that it is already a month since I left Matang. I still look at all the pictures I took every day. Love, Lene (the photographer)

Hi Heather,

Hope all is well on your adventures in South Africa! Seen the new diaries.. U probably know already but you were featured in this weeks Herts Advertiser. A lil local fame for the great work you doing. Cant wait to hear the stories when you come back to sunny Redbourn…well, thats if you dont hop skip and jump back to Borneo before coming back to UK.

Diane has been told she needs a Rabbies innoculation!

Is this really necessary?

Your help would be most appreciated.

The best thing to do is contact the Great Orangutan Project for their advice, I have not had the innoculation but you are in contact with wild animals I do not know of any cases of rabies but it has to be your decision.

Hi Heather!
Hope you enjoy your time in South Africa and you learned a lot. It was pleasure to work with you during project in Matang, I really enjoy this time.It was so funny when I was coming to your house in the morning and there was such a mess, of course not made by you, but one of your “sons”:).
I hope to come back to Matang one day. Just please dont pull out poor crickets legs any more!
